Dublin Community TV on air tomorrow

Dublin Community Television, which is decribed as "Ireland's first democratically-run, advert-free" TV channel is to launch and officially switch on at 1pm tomorrow, Wenesday July 16, at the New Theatre Temple Bar.

It will be available -- as it has been on a pilot basis since September -- on the Chorus ntl digital cable network on Channel 802. Here's the press release from their website:

Does more journalism courses equal a higher standard of writing?

Shane Hegarty, over at the Irish Times blogs asks if "All these journalism courses must mean a higher standard of writing … right?"

He has got a bit of a debate going in the comments section too. We might comment more on this later. (via mulley.net)

Hegarty's post last year on a higher diploma in journalism by the Irish Academy of Public Relations is quite amusing.

Irish Daily Mail colour piece leads to jury dismissal in 'Celebrity Farm' libel case

An Irish Daily Mail colour article was found to be prejudicial and has led to a jury being dismissed in a libel action case against Ireland on Sunday, now the Irish Mail on Sunday.

The High Court libel action was taken by broadcaster Paddy O'Gorman against Associated Newspapers. O’Gorman is suing the paper group over an article published in 2003 which he claims accused him of displaying "perverted sexuality" while taking part in the RTE Celebrity Farm reality TV show.

RTE one shooting two in the foot?

We think it was a story in the Evening Herald  which recently highlighted RTE competing with its self over high profile programming, the above image shows a prime example.

Prosperity on RTE One while David McWilliams' latest TV show, the Generation Game, on RTE Two.

Both shows would most likely get higher viewership if not pitted against each other... although maybe this way more people will not tune into rivals?

Business Journalist Awards for Ireland

UCD are set to run awards for business journalism in the Republic and Northern Ireland.

The Business Journalist Awards are being organised by the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.

With a fund of €12,000 the awards are open to journalists who work for newspapers, radio, television, magazines, newsletters, commercial electronic media. This includes Irish outlets and Irish editions of UK publications.

Categories include business news, business comment, business feature, Business Technology Journalist, business broadcast, specialist business reporting, regional business reporting, and Young Journalist of the Year. Winner of each will get €1,500.

Irish digital terrestrial TV trial gets sporty

Setanta Ireland and Setanta Golf channels are to be added to the digital terrestrial television trial in Ireland, the Department of Communications said yesterday, the new announcement must come as a blow to the cable companies NTL and Chorus who are currently advertising with a focus on the two Setanta sports stations.

The NTL and Chorus parent company, UPC Ireland, has previously warned the government not to “jeopardise” commercial investments.

Irish watch less TV then Euro neighbours

A post on the Edelman Dublin blog today remind us of news in the Irish Times last week that the Irish watch less television then our European neighbors, interestingly an increass in online usage has had a little to no impact on TV viewership numbers... 

On average, Irish people watch TV for an average of just over three hours (182 minutes) per day. In the UK, the average is 216 minutes per day. Paul Moran, managing director of MediaWorks, who compiled the data from Nielsen ratings, points out that, despite the increasing amount of time people are spending online, TV viewership has remained relatively consistent over the past decade. News is still the most popular TV programme genre in Ireland, whereas reality shows are the most popular in the UK. -  Media&Marketing, the Irish Times
